Licenses and Permits

Licenses, Permits, and Town Hall

The City Clerk issues many licenses and permits. He also schedules events in Town Hall. Below is a summary of these duties. To get a permit or schedule an event, contact the City Clerk at 677-0223 or by email at cityclerk@trinidad.ca.gov.

Business Licenses: Each business located in Trinidad or doing business in the city limits, for example by delivering products, must have an annual business license.

Dog Licenses: Every dog over the age of four months must be licensed by the City, except for dogs owned by visitors temporarily staying in Trinidad.

Encroachment Permits: Events or construction projects that use, block, or involve City property need an encroachment permit. Home construction or remodeling, parades, weddings, tree trimming or removal, or any other activity that will impede the use of City streets and sidewalks need this permit.

Building Permits: Building permits are required for home construction, remodeling, and various other projects. The City's zoning ordinance specifies which projects require building permits. Some projects require design review and a hearing by the Planning Commission, others do not. The City Clerk works with applicants and the Planning Department to issue building permits.

Burn Permits: State laws regulating open burning have recently changed. No "burn barrels" are permitted in the City. The City Clerk can provide the paperwork and assist in getting a burn permit.

Blue Bags: In lieu of a trash can, Humboldt Sanitation provides "Blue Bags" which the City sells at cost. Blue bags can be filled with trash, tied, and set out for pickup on trash day.

Town Hall Event: Town Hall is the center for community activities in Trinidad. Conferences, weddings, receptions, celebrations, dance and exercise classes, and concerts are held throughout the year. Residents, non-residents, and organizations can reserve Town Hall. The City Clerk can explain any fees, permits, and other requirements for using Town Hall.
