Prevent and Survive Home Fires
Fire Chief Tom Marquette recommends the following steps that individuals and families can take to prevent and survive home fires.
Steps to prevent home fires...
- Install smoke detectors on every level near bedrooms.
- Test smoke detector batteries monthly and replace each New Years.
- Have wood stoves and chimneys checked each year.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
- Avoid overloading electrical outlets.
- Never smoke in bed.
- Keep matches and lighters away from children.
- Plan and practice a fire escape route from every room.
Steps to survive home fires...
- Crawl low under smoke.
- Feel closed doors with the back of your hand. If the door is hot use another exit. If the door is not hot open it slowly and check for fire.
- Meet in a designated place outside and call for help.
- Never return to a burning building - that's our job.
- Teach your children not to hide from fire fighters. Schedule a visit to the Fire Station and we will demonstrate our protective gear to your children.
