Prevent and Survive Home Fires

Fire Chief Tom Marquette recommends the following steps that individuals and families can take to prevent and survive home fires.

Steps to prevent home fires...

  1. Install smoke detectors on every level near bedrooms.
  2. Test smoke detector batteries monthly and replace each New Years.
  3. Have wood stoves and chimneys checked each year.
  4. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
  5. Avoid overloading electrical outlets.
  6. Never smoke in bed.
  7. Keep matches and lighters away from children.
  8. Plan and practice a fire escape route from every room.

Steps to survive home fires...

  1. Crawl low under smoke.
  2. Feel closed doors with the back of your hand. If the door is hot use another exit. If the door is not hot open it slowly and check for fire.
  3. Meet in a designated place outside and call for help.
  4. Never return to a burning building - that's our job.
  5. Teach your children not to hide from fire fighters. Schedule a visit to the Fire Station and we will demonstrate our protective gear to your children.
