House Numbering

Many homes in Trinidad sit back from the street, often along dark driveways. House numbers may not be visible from the street.

In an emergency, the 911 dispatcher broadcasts the address of the emergency. However, if your house numbers are not visible from the street precious minutes may be lost trying to find your house. This is especially true for those calls outside the City limits where there are no street lights.

Section 15.20 of the Municipal Code covers House Numbering. Any building fronting any street must have a street number in a "conspicuous place" on the front of the building with numbers "not less than three inches high" and "easily visible and legible from the center of the street."

If you stand in the middle of your street and cannot clearly see your house numbers, then emergency responders will not be able to see them either. At night many houses are away from street lights and some houses are back from the street along dark driveways.

Your life, or the life of a loved one, may depend on the Volunteer Fire Department being able to quickly locate your home, and clearly visible house numbers are a critical part of finding you in an emergency.
