Permits and Design Review

State and local laws require public hearings and decisions on many developments. Since Trinidad is entirely within the Coastal Zone, the California Coastal Commission (opens in a new browser window) has jurisdiction over most development projects within the City limits.

The Planning Commission conducts hearings that require one or more development permits. Such permits include a conditional use permit, variance, and coastal development permit. The Planning staff analyze projects and provide staff reports with recommendations to aid the Commission's decisions.

If you are considering any type of building or remodeling project, consult the Land Use Regulations and Permits page. Your first call should be to the City Clerk, 677-0223, who coordinates projects with the Planning Department.

Specific regulations about lot and building sizes, signs, what can be built in certain zones, and other design issues can be found in the City's Zoning Ordinance.
