No one likes to think about emergencies but unfortunately, they happen whether we are ready or not. Being prepared helps quiet some of our concerns leaving us feeling more in control. Here are some recommended steps that you can use to get ready for the next earthquake, power outage, tsunami, or other emergency.
SIGN UP FOR ALERTS
- Humboldt ALERT is Humboldt County’s public alert and warning system
- PG&E Power Outage alerts (by signing into your account and opting in)
- USGS Earthquake Alerts
- Tsunami alerts from the US Tsunami Warning System
- National Weather Service Wireless Emergency Alerts
- City of Trinidad broadcast via email and text {link tbd}
MAKE A PERSONAL EMERGENCY PLAN
Put together a personal emergency plan by choosing from one of the following or customizing your plan from a variety of sources:
- Ready.gov Make a Plan
- Humboldt County Personal Emergency Plan
- Be Red Cross Ready
- Speak to your local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteer to learn more about recommendations for your specific area/risks
- FEMA Basic Preparedness Guide
PREPARE AN EMERGENCY KIT
There are many online resources that describe what's needed in an emergency preparedness kit. Get started by printing one and attaching it to a box or paper bag and filling it as you go about your daily routine. The following are examples that you can customize for your specific needs:
- Build a Kit at Ready.gov
- What you Need in a Survival Kit at American Red Cross
KNOW WHERE TO GET INFORMATION DURING EMERGENCIES
In a major emergency, access to television and internet information may be limited to non-existent. If cell towers are operational, you will be able to use your smart phone to get the latest emergency broadcasts, but a battery-powered or hand-cranked radio with a list of National and Local radio stations taped to it can be extremely valuable.
